RE-USE ME Series
“Chandelier”
This is highly hanging installation like a chandelier. The inherent irony of a chandelier – signifying wealth, prestige and history - composed of discarded carrier bags – signifying waste and rubbish - is heightened by the neutral and somewhat prosaic context of the space.

ARTIST STATEMENT
I am mainly interested in re-creating the eternal meaning of the object and personal memory through artwork which is around me.
For more than a year of time, I’ve been collecting the countless numbers of plastic bags from mega-stores; The plastic bags that holds nearly no monitory value (practi- cally the only mass-produced item that you obtain free of charge) in this extremely commercial modern days, yet ironically the elements that adds such a vivid colour to the scene of modern cities perhaps carelessly discarded. Collected bags are shredded and crocheted to take a new form of life into something such as a chandelier – signi- fying wealth, prestige and history-by my intense labour. It requires incredibly time and labour consuming process that it has become more or less like a meditation day by day to commit myself to producing this work of art-which nearly makes me feel connected to oriental notion of disciplinary craftsmanship in a way-. This installation also is designed site-specific and requires a good time for me to communicate with the exhibition space to perfect the installation as well.
My latest site-specific project entitled ‘Re-Use Me’ depicts the social and functional meaning of daily plastic shopping bags. Discarded materiality by temporary usage depending on its necessity and value seems to disclose capitalism, consumerism and contemporary art era. This necessity and value could be estimated under the pretext of power game in consumerism. This project I would like to deliver innovative meaning to daily consumable object as an art object.
